On the afternoon of May 22nd, Hannah was at her Joplin house with her daughter Avery and 10 year old sister Leah. Avery was napping in her crib as the storm started to roll in. Leah was getting scared as she watched the warnings on TV with Hannah. Hannah decided to have her little sister go ahead and get in the bathtub and had Avery join her. She then opened the back door to put her car in the garage because it had just started to hail. As she did this, she sensed she didn’t have much time left so she turned around and jumped in the tub with the girls. Before she had even gotten there the windows were all being blown out. As they clung to each other in the tub, they heard the bathroom door slam and felt the tub lift up and move twice. After the storm settled they had to crawl their way out of the rubble to find that the house had moved 5 feet off of the foundation and split in half. They walked several blocks barefoot. Through the whole experience, Avery didn’t make a sound.
Here are some pictures of the damage she sent:
This is something Hannah wanted to add, “Though I know I lost my home, car, and job, I know we were protected and watched over and still looked out for. We are blessed to have each other and tons of people around us who have helped in so many ways and I know there is a reason for everything.” Their house is being rebuilt soon and she is very excited to have these pictures to hang on the new walls.
